The City of Dana Point is named after Richard Henry Dana Jr. (1815-1882), a Harvard-trained lawyer and seaman. He referred to Bahia Capistrano or Capistrano Bay as the “most romantic spot on the coast of California.”
On May 31, 1931, Edward L. Doheny Senior donated ocean front land to the state of California in his son Ned’s honor. On July 1, 1963 the beach was named Doheny State Beach. It was California’s first state beach.
